Emsisoft awarded “Top Rated Product of 2014″ by AV-Comparatives

av_awardAV-Comparatives released their 2014 Summary Report today, detailing the performance of 23 competing vendors in all of their tests throughout the past year. Emsisoft received the “Top Product of the Year” award, with five Advanced+ ratings throughout the year.

The Top Rated Product of the year is given out by AV-Comparatives to a select number of products which reach a very high overall standard in the public main tests. Only 6 other vendors out of the 23 received this awardThis is a notable achievement for us, especially since 2013 was the very first year we competed in this test.

Mastering real-world protection: we’re there when you need it

Throughout the entire year, AV-Comparatives tested 23 security programs for Windows on their ability to protect against real-world internet threats, identify thousands of recent malicious programs, and provide protection without slowing down the PC. Additionally, optional tests checked how well the products could remove malware from an infected PC, block new and unknown threats and protect the user against phishing attacks. Emsisoft participated in all AV-Comparatives tests and received awards for all the tests we participated in throughout the year and consistently scored in the top 20% range. Highlights include:

  • Highest possible ranking (Advanced+) in all Real-World protection tests in 2013 and 2014- four times in a row!
  • Advanced+ awards for both File Detection Tests (March and September 2014)
  • First place ranking in 4-month Malware Protection Test Marathon
  • Advanced+ rating in Proactive test (March 2014)

Special mention: PUP-detection abilities, new interface and customer support

As you may have noticed, Emsisoft takes a strong stand against potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), such as toolbars, adware, and other downloads that try to sneak on your computer. We especially believe that antivirus vendors should stay far away from software bundling practices. We believe that transparency is the key to a sustainable business, and opt-out only bundled software programs are far from the high ethical standards we want to run our business by. AV-comparatives made a special remark about Emsisoft’s PUP-detection abilities. They particularly liked the simple but helpful descriptions of protection features, and the very effectively illustrated explanation of PUPs.

Emsisoft’s renewed user-interface received an honorable mention as well: “Emsisoft’s new design allows the user to access all important functions and data very quickly and easily, without any searching or head-scratching required. We found Emsisoft’s status display to be very clear, whilst showing precisely which components are active and which ones are not. Overall, we were very impressed with the new design of Emsisoft Anti-Malware. We feel it does an outstanding job of making important features easy to access.”

AV-Comparatives also pointed out that our support channels (forum and other customer service) provides service to everyone: “Emsisoft provides free malware-removal to anyone, whether they’re an Emsisoft user or not.” You may have noticed that our support forum is open to everyone. We pride ourselves in personal and quick support (no filling out forms with us) and believe this is the best approach towards our vision of a malware-free world as well as binding loyal customers.

Anti-Malware versus Antivirus: are we the only one getting it right?

Last but not least, AV-comparatives commented on the fact that we’re the only vendor who uses the name anti-malware instead of antivirus in the right way. They state:

“Although it’s scarcely and a very important point, we note that the name of the product Anti-Malware, is more appropriate than Antivirus (commonly used by many other programs), as the program removes all kind of malicious programs.”

We still receive a lot of questions about whether we’re a full antivirus program and why we’re not called Emsisoft Antivirus instead. The short answer is: malware is the all-encompassing word for all internet threats, including viruses. Nowadays, viruses only make up a few percent of all malware. The correct name for a full internet security protection suite is anti-malware, NOT antivirus. Emsisoft Anti-Malware protects against all internet threats, including viruses, therefore it’s the most logical name to use.
